Dear FUSD Community:

During these times of uncertainty we continue to have concerns about the impact COVID-19 will have on the future of our exceptional students. Following Wednesday’s press conference by Governor Newsom, recommendations from the California Department of Education and direction from Alameda County (Statement from County Superintendent), FUSD schools will be closed through the remainder of the school year.

While schools may be closed, instruction will continue. The school district and the Fremont Unified District Teachers Association (FUDTA) negotiated a standard for distance learning during the school closures. In order for educators to receive training on the distance learning model, all educators will be provided the opportunity to participate in professional development on April 8th and 9th, the two days leading up to Spring Break. During these two days educators may check-in on students but will also be involved in learning themselves. Spring Break will run from April 10-17 as originally scheduled. In accordance with the FUSD Homework Policy, no material will be assigned to students over Spring Break. This will be time for everyone to take care of essential personal needs. Beginning April 20th, teachers will seek to make contact with students at least twice a week and will provide learning opportunities each weekday.

Our Board of Education also expresses their gratitude to our Fremont community. The Board and district will continue to review upcoming topics, such as grading, funding, graduation, and summer school. Grading, especially for high school students remains a hot topic. The California Department of Education (CDE) has not provided guidance on this subject. We are in constant communication  with neighboring districts and districts across California to examine models for grading during distance learning. As guidelines become available and are developed we will inform all stakeholders.

If students or parents have questions or feel that they are receiving too much or too little work please start by checking in with the teacher. Our teachers, like all of us, are new at distance learning. They look forward to addressing any questions on the varied topics. Counselors and principals are always available to support students and families...please ask.

Please remember and remind each other to remain focused on the big picture of being thankful for the health and safety of our families, friends, and loved ones, and to check-in regularly on your neighbors and friends. I also ask that if you are a first-responder in need of childcare, please contact the District’s Public Information Officer, Brian Killgore, at bkillgore@fusdk12.net and we will seek assistance for you within the District. As I mentioned previously, Fremont is a resilient community and we will get through this time of uncertainty together.

Here are some recommendations from Dr. Denise Pope, the founder of Challenge Success at Stanford University, to help prioritize students’ well-being and engagement with learning during school closures.

Here is an additional resource about how to talk to your child about the Coronavirus.

Please keep in mind all of the precautions, such as washing your hands periodically, social distancing six feet apart, and no more than 10 people in a room. I wish you and your family well and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Raúl M. Zamora, Ed.D.
