District/Community Spring Break is finally here! |
This is the latest spring break I think I’ve seen in my 25 years of education, and I suspect we are all more than ready to have a week’s respite. Luckily, the ten-day forecast has lots of sun and warm temperatures ahead. As with every break, I encourage staff, students, and families to spend time doing what feeds the body, mind, and soul. Take off your "work" hats and put on your baseball caps, beach hats, sun bonnets, beanies, boaters, or berets. However you decide to spend your time off ...enjoy!

Instructional Serv Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Test Blueprints Modified for 2018-19 |
From the Department Assessment and Accountability - SBAC test blueprints for the summative assessments have been modified for the 2018-19 administration.
- For English language arts/literacy, the short-answer computer-adaptive-test (CAT) reading items and the brief-write CAT items have been removed for grades 3, 4, and 5. In addition, the research items associated with the Performance Task (PT) will be reduced from 3 to 1 for all grades. Two additional machine-scored items have been added to the CAT portion of the test to compensate for the reduction of items in the PT.
- For math, a small number of short-answer items have been removed from the CAT pool for grades 6-8 and high school. Short-answer items have been retained in the performance task.
These changes do not impact the calculation of scale scores or the comparison of scores from year to year. For more detailed information, please refer to this communication from CAASPP.

Business Serv Beware of Phishing Scams
|
Information Technology (IT) staff have received several reports of emails coming from what appears to be the school principals asking other staff members to purchase gift cards. While the email system is set up to block these emails, some may occasionally get through the spam filter. These types of emails are commonly referred to as "phishing" emails.
If you think you may have received a phishing email, please contact the IT Department for assistance at extension 12611. Alternatively, you can forward the information to "help@fusdk12.net".
What are some telltale signs that an email might be fraudulent?
-
Check the actual email address. Email from the legitimate staff email accounts from our email server will appear from the domains "@fremont.k12.ca.us" or "@fusdk12.net". Any other domain could mean the emailer is impersonating someone.
- Unusually urgent requests asking you to purchase something immediately and send activation codes for gift cards. Other urgent requests might involve sending sensitive information such as staff or student data.
- Links to external websites that ask for personal or private information or passwords
- Strange attachments. Some files can contain malicious code that can damage the operating system, install viruses or other malware, or even compromise other computers or servers in the district.

Instructional Serv California Science Test (CAST) Practice and Training Tests
|
From the Department of Assessment & Accountability - A CAST practice test is now available for grades five and eight and high school. In addition, the training test for grade eight has been updated. Practice and training tests can be accessed on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Portal Online Practice and Training Tests Portal web page. Each practice test consists of a series of discrete or stand-alone items followed by three performance tasks, one from each of the three science domains. For the operational assessment, some students may receive three performance tasks, and others will receive additional discrete items. A CAST braille practice test will be available in January 2019.

Instructional Serv Assessment Schedule |
The 2018-19 District Assessment Schedule has been published on the Assessment & Accountability internal web page under District Assessments. Most of the testing dates are similar to last year, with the exception of the ELA interim assessments which have been pushed up to November this year. This was done in order to have the results in time for use in the reclassification of English Learners, thus avoiding the need for any RFEP'd students to take the ELPAC in February.
